Eyelid Surgery Can Correct Sagging Eyelids
If you have drooping eyelids that obstruct your vision, Dr. Francis Clark at Ophthalmology Physicians & Surgeons, PC in Philadelphia, PA, can perform blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) to lift the eyelids and help you see clearly. This procedure can also have a rejuvenating aesthetic effect that helps patients to look more rested and alert.
About Blepharoplasty
At our practice, a blepharoplasty is primarily performed to improve vision obstructed by drooping eyelids. A blepharoplasty is performed by removing fat deposits and excess skin from the upper and lower eyelids. The remaining skin is tightened. All necessary incisions are created in the natural folds of the eyelids, resulting in virtually unnoticeable scarring.

Blepharoplasty Treatment Process
Before recommending surgery, Dr. Clark will conduct an eye exam and a review of your medical history to make certain that blepharoplasty is right for you. The best candidates are nonsmokers who are free of medical conditions that could interfere with proper healing. If he recommends blepharoplasty, you can expect that treatment will involve:
- Anesthesia: Eyelid surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia to maintain your comfort.
- Incisions: Small incisions will be made along the natural creases of the lid in order to result in inconspicuous scarring.
- Removal of Excess Tissue: Any skin or excess tissue that is contributing to obstructed vision will be carefully and skillfully removed.
- Repositioning: The remaining tissue will be lifted and repositioned to look natural and allow you to see clearly, while maintaining the proper function of the eyelids.
- Sutures: Once the tissues are in the right position, the incisions will be closed with sutures.
You should plan to have a friend or family member drive you to and from your appointment.
Dr. Clark makes himself available to his patients before, during, and after the procedure to ensure the best possible results.
Recovery
As with any surgical procedure, some tenderness is to be expected. However, most patients experience only mild discomfort, likening the feeling to sunburn or windburn. While the anesthesia is wearing off, the skin around your lids may feel tight. Sensitivity and soreness may persist for several days. Prescriptions medications should be obtained prior to the procedure, and should be taken exactly as directed. Pain can be addressed with the use of over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication.
Swelling can be reduced with the use of a cold compress by gently applying it to the area in 20-minute intervals. Elevating your head while you are sleeping or resting can also help to reduce inflammation. Some degree of swelling is normal for the first several days, and may cause your vision to be slightly blurred. It is important to avoid strain and intensive exercise for a prescribed period following surgery. Dr. Clark will let you know when it is safe to resume certain activities. You may need up to 10 days away from work.
