Botox® for Medical Reasons

Alleviate Pain & Spasms with Botox Medical Injections

At Ophthalmology Physicians & Surgeons, PC in Philadelphia, PA, our doctors can administer BOTOX® for medical reasons such as the treatment of migraine headaches, crossed eyes, eye spasms, and other conditions. During a quick office procedure, we can administer these injections in a way that provides you with the relief you need and deserve.

The muscle relaxing properties of BOTOX can have a number of medical applications.

What is BOTOX?

Made popular as a cosmetic treatment, this injectable can help alleviate chronic pain, jaw tension, spasms, and more by blocking nerve impulses that cause specific muscle contractions. BOTOX is created from a highly diluted neuromuscular toxin. Confirmed as a safe and effective treatment when administered by experienced professionals, it is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Indications for BOTOX Injections

Before recommending BOTOX or any other treatment, we will carefully review your medical history and assess your candidacy. BOTOX may be recommended if you suffer from:

  • Crossed Eyes (Strabismus): BOTOX can effectively relax the eye muscles to correct crossed eyes. Patients who undergo this treatment can notice effects approximately 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. After approximately three to four months, the muscle cells develop new receptors, allowing the eyes to cross again. Repeat injections can help to restore the desired effect.
  • Uncontrolled Blinking (Blepharospasm): Involuntary blinking is triggered by abnormal function within the basal ganglia, the area of the brain that controls muscle movement. Noticeable effects of BOTOX injections begin within about a week, with a mean period of relief lasting three months. Retreatments at prescribed intervals can provide long-term relief.
  • Migraines: BOTOX is the first preventative migraine treatment that has been approved by the FDA. Most treatments available today address migraines after they have already started. BOTOX injections can prevent migraines and headaches proactively, before the effects begin. BOTOX reports that on average, these injections prevent up to nine migraines a month when administered every 12 weeks
  • Cervical Dystonia: Sometimes called spasmodic torticollis, cervical dystonia is a condition in which the neck muscles involuntarily contract. This painful and uncommon disorder is a result of abnormal signals from the brain, and typically causes the head to uncontrollably twist, turn, or tilt. BOTOX® can calm the overactive muscles, allowing the neck returns to a more normal position.

On average, these injections prevent up to nine migraines a month when administered every 12 weeks.

Fast, Convenient Treatment

Because BOTOX injections are localized and minimally invasive, they require no downtime. Although the length of the procedure will vary depending on your specific needs, most patients can receive their treatment in about 15 minutes.
