Macular Degeneration

Managing Macular Degeneration

The macula (the center of the retina) provides the central focus crucial to tasks such as reading and driving. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of compromised vision among those over age 50. Although macular degeneration is chronic, it can be managed. At Ophthalmology Physicians & Surgeons, PC, we can diagnose the condition and recommend the best way to protect your vision at any of our offices throughout the Philadelphia, PA, area.

The surest way to detect and control macular degeneration is to visit our practice for regular eye exams, especially if you have a family history of the condition. If you do not currently attend eye exams annually, and especially if you have been diagnosed with macular degeneration, we encourage you to contact us online or call (215) 672-4300 to schedule a checkup.

Dry versus Wet Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is categorized as either being dry or wet based on how the condition is affecting the eye:

  • Dry macular degeneration is characterized by a deterioration of the retina resulting in deposits called drusen. The result is an impaired ability to achieve central focus. Dry macular degeneration is the most common type, accounting for about 90 percent of all cases.
  • Wet macular degeneration occurs due to irregular blood vessel growth within the retina. These blood vessels eventually leak, resulting in scar tissue and a compromise in the function of macular cells.

The surest way to detect and control macular degeneration is to attend regular eye exams, especially if you have a family history of the condition.

Managing Macular Degeneration

If it is detected early, patients can inhibit the progression of dry macular degeneration by taking antioxidants and zinc. In many instances, this approach can help patients avoid developing advanced macular degeneration and experiencing related vision impairment.

Wet macular degeneration can require either laser treatment or special injections. If irregular blood vessels have not yet reached the macula, our doctors can use special lasers to destroy these blood vessels. The condition can also be treated with anti-VEGF(vascular endothelial growth factor A) injections that deliver medication directly into the vitreous (the gel that fills the eye). These injections can prevent blood vessels from affecting the macula. Since macular degeneration is chronic, the treatment may need to be repeated. During a consultation, your doctor can examine your eyes using sophisticated technology to determine the most conservative and effective approach to helping you maintain your vision.
