Find out more and cataract surgery and astigmatism
Cataract surgery is one of the most frequently performed surgeries in the United States today. Surgery is the only permanent way to treat cataracts and is an effective solution for patients who have cataracts with astigmatism. Cataract surgery and astigmatism treatment is offered in Philadelphia, PA, by Ophthalmology Physicians & Surgeons, a leading eye care practice in Pennsylvania.
With eleven locations in the greater Philadelphia area, we perform cataract surgery almost everyday. Twelve specialized doctors focus exclusively on ocular health at Ophthalmology Physicians & Surgeons, so you know your vision is in the right hands at our practice. About Cataract Surgery
Cataracts cause cloudy, blurred vision and, left untreated, can potentially lead to blindness. Primarily age-related, cataracts can also result from injury, disease, or medication. Cataracts can be safely removed with laser or ultrasound-assisted surgery, restoring clear vision to patients.
In cataract surgery, doctors break up and remove the crystalline lens of the eye that has become clouded, and the old lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Implanted in the eye, the IOL restores sharp vision, allowing many patients to see clearly without prescription glasses or contact lenses. A variety of IOLs are available, including monofocal, multifocal and Toric lenses, which are created to correct astigmatism.
Cataract Surgery for Astigmatism
Patients with astigmatism have irregularly shaped corneas that cause distorted vision both near and far. The Toric IOL is designed with an astigmatism correction built into the lens. Your doctor determines the degree of correction needed, then orders the custom lens to use during your cataract surgery. The Toric IOL is very effective for most astigmatism patients, allowing some to see better than ever before.
Another option for cataract patients with astigmatism is limbal relaxing incisions (LRI). This procedure can be performed during cataract surgery or at a later date. LRI are tiny incisions the surgeon makes around the peripheral area of the cornea. These deep incisions are placed in precisely determined locations to alter the cornea’s shape and make it more spherical instead of oblong.
After your consultation and exam, our doctors will provide a recommendation for treatment for you. Some patients who have previously undergone cataract surgery can benefit from LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), which can also correct astigmatism and eliminate or reduce the need for glasses.
