Understanding Cataracts and Cataract Surgery

Although cataracts can occur for a number of reasons, age is the most common cause. The crystalline lens, which lies behind the cornea, is made up of water and protein. Over time, the protein cells can break up and clump together, creating cataracts. As the cells accumulate, it becomes increasingly difficult for light to pass clearly through your lens and onto your retina, resulting in progressively distorted vision.

Cataract surgery involves removing the lens and replacing it with an intraocular lens (IOL). To ensure you experience the best possible results, we offer several types of IOLs, and will work with you to choose the right one for your lifestyle and vision needs. We have IOLs designed to help patients who are farsighted, nearsighted, or have astigmatism. Cataract surgery is performed under local anesthesia, and most patients experience only mild irritation and light sensitivity following the procedure. Following cataract surgery, you may still need to wear your glasses, but can enjoy overall sharper, clearer vision.

The Femtosecond Laser

Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed in the U.S., and the femtosecond laser makes it safer and more efficient than ever before. This laser offers greater precision than handheld surgical instruments. While performing cataract surgery, we use 3-D imaging to guide the femtosecond laser in creating a very small incision on the peripheral cornea. The high-speed laser pulses break up the clouded cataract, and the pieces are removed through the incision. This approach results in minimal inflammation, irritation, and discomfort, while reducing the risk of complications such as infection.

About 90% of all cataract patients are eligible for this innovative and safe procedure. During your consultation with us, we can discuss your options, and help you determine which cataract treatment is right for you.

Our femtoseond laser surgeries are performed exclusively at the Blue Bell Surgery Center. This facility has the great advantage of being one of only two locations in the country that does not charge an extra fee for the use of the femtosecond laser. Most surgical centers that use this technology may charge up to $1,200 per eye beyond insurance coverage. At the Blue Bell Center, you can benefit from a safer, more precise procedure for the cost of traditional cataract surgery. It is just one way that we at Ophthalmology Physicians & Surgeons, PC are dedicated to providing outstanding and affordable ocular care.
