COST OF CATARACT SURGERY

The majority of the cost of cataract surgery at our Philadelphia, PA, practice is covered by most insurance plans. Our approach to cataract surgery provides exceptional value. We often use a femtosecond laser to create the necessary corneal incisions or to make limbal relaxing incisions when needed, the femtosecond laser results in a faster, more comfortable recovery than surgery performed using a blade. We are one of only two practices in the United States who offer this service without an additional cost to the patient. However, if you choose to receive a premium intraocular lenses (IOLs), this will incur additional out-of-pocket expenses. During a consultation with one of our surgeons, we can explain what you can expect to pay for surgery based on your needs and goals.

Premium IOLs

Cataract surgery involves replacing a clouded crystalline lens (the lens that lays behind the iris, helping to focus light onto the retina) with a synthetic lens, or IOL. Traditional IOLs are monofocal, meaning they can provide focus at one distance, either near or far. These lenses are usually covered by insurance. The downside is that recipients will require glasses for either close or far focus.

Today, patients have the option of choosing premium IOLs, which insurance plans typically do not cover in full. However, they can provide the added advantage of minimizing a patient's need for glasses. There are many types of multifocal lenses on the market that can provide near, intermediate, and far focus. While multifocal lens recipients may still need glasses for tasks such as reading medicine bottle labels or other very small print, patients typically find that their need for corrective eyewear has been reduced to an absolute minimum. There are also toric IOLs available, which are specially designed to benefit patients with astigmatism.

While they are undergoing cataract surgery, some astigmatic patients may elect to receive limbal relaxing incisions, which can change the shape of the cornea to improve focus. Most insurance companies will not cover the cost of this treatment.

IOL

Premium IOLs provide extraordinary benefits, but will require an out-of-pocket expense.
