Seek Treatment for Cataractsto Improve Your Quality of Life

More than 50% of Americans over the age of 65 have cataracts. The onset of symptoms is gradual, meaning many people may not realize they have the condition until after many years. Symptoms of cataracts include blurred vision, the loss of color vibrancy, and difficulty with night vision. If you suffer from cataracts, our Philadelphia clinic offers highly effective surgical treatment using the latest technology. By removing and replacing the clouded crystalline lens, we can restore your vision, so you can see clearly and sharply. Understanding Cataracts

When you look at an object, light reflects off its surface and enters into your eye, passing through the crystalline lens onto the retina. A lens affected by cataracts obstructs the path of light, resulting in distorted vision.

There are a number of causes for cataracts, including injury, medications and diseases. Aging is the most common cause of cataracts. As we grow older, the structure of our eyes changes, causing proteins to break up and group together in the lens, forming cataracts. Gradually, the cataracts become larger and symptoms worsen.

Cataract Symptoms

The first symptoms of cataracts can include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulty with night vision
  • Halos and glares
  • Changes in glasses prescriptions
  • Double vision
  • Changes in color perception
  • Nearsightedness

If you notice these symptoms, or notice other changes to your vision, it is important to be seen by an eye care professional. We can run simple but conclusive eye tests to check for cataracts and determine a plan to improve your vision.

Treatment Options

While there are a number of ways to cope with the symptoms of cataracts, the only permanent treatment is surgery. During cataract surgery, we will remove your clouded lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). We offer several types of IOLs, including monofocal and multifocal lenses. Monofocal lenses provide vision correction at one distance, meaning you may still need to wear glasses for reading, computer use, and similar activities. Multifocal lenses provide vision correction for both nearsightedness and farsightedness, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for glasses. For patients with astigmatism, we also offer Toric IOLs. No matter what type of lens you need, you will benefit from our advanced technology. At Ophthalmology Physicians & Surgeons, we can determine your candidacy and perform cataract surgery using a high-speed femtosecond laser, which provides unprecedented customization and precision for optimal healing and results.

The Benefits of Cataract Treatment

Cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness, and surgery is the only way to correct this condition. The  surgery itself is extremely safe, with more than 2 million successful procedures performed in the U.S. each year. If cataracts are beginning to obstruct your vision and your quality of life, laser cataract surgery can be an incredible investment.
