What you need to do before choosing a cataract surgeon…

Cataracts are the result of the natural lens inside the eye becoming cloudy as it ages.  Most everyone, if they live long enough, will develop cataracts at some point in their lifetime, and we presently do not know how to prevent their formation. Cataract surgery is a life-changing event, and you should select your surgeon carefully. Choose a practice that is dedicated to patient safety, using only the best technology, and careful long-term patient follow-up care.

Experience Matters

Cataract surgery is the most common procedure performed by an ophthalmologist. In 2015, 3.6 million cataract procedures were performed in the United States and more than 20 million were performed worldwide. In fact, cataract surgery is the most popular “elective” surgery in the United States.

Choosing a cataract surgeon to operate on your cataracts is an important process. It is vital that you find a doctor that is both experienced and makes you feel comfortable.

-Dr. Francis Clark, Cataract Surgeon

In the United States, there are approximately 18,000 ophthalmologists, of whom 9,000 perform cataract surgery regularly. Thus, a typical surgeon might anticipate a surgical volume of about 400 eyes per year.

Some surgeons dabble in cataract surgery, performing a few cases here and there. Your surgeon should be firmly committed to cataract surgery and be performing many procedures each month. Be sure to discuss how many cataract procedures your cataract surgeon does.  Not all cataract surgeons are created equal in skill or training.

Questions to Ask When Choosing a Cataract Surgeon:

As a cataract surgeon, do you perform laser cataract surgery?

The newest advancement in cataract surgery comes from the introduction of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery. The laser-assisted cataract surgery can improve the predictability and safety of refractive cataract surgery and enhance refractive outcomes.

Your cataract surgeon should be skilled at all of the currently available techniques to treat cataracts.

Do you have experience in implanting premium intraocular lenses (IOLs)?

Intraocular lenses, or IOLs, are implantable lenses that are used to replace the natural, cloudesd lenses of the eyes. When your cataract surgeon removes your old, clouded lens and replaces it with an IOL, you could enjoy significantly enhanced vision with premium IOLs at all distances. Surgeons who specialize in premium lens can evaluate a patient’s vision and lifestyle to determine whether a premium IOL is appropriate.

Types of Premium IOLs include:

-Toric

-Multi-focal

-Accommodating

As a cataract surgeon, do you have access to state-of-the-art equipment?

In order to achieve excellent cataract surgery outcome, the eye must be evaluated with the latest technology and instruments.  Using sophisticated corneal topography and tomography systems are required to evaluate the structures of the eye. Optical coherence biometry and immersion ultrasound are required for appropriate measurement of the eye.

Are you comfortable with your cataract surgeon?

Your vision is priceless, and you must feel comfortable with your cataract surgeon on a personal level. Some of the surgical procedures are complex, and you may have many questions which must be completely answered prior to and after your surgery. Your cataract surgeon should take the time to answer all your questions in an honest and caring manner.
