Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic Retinopathy is caused by changes in the blood vessels of the retina.
In some, blood vessels may leak. In others, abnormal blood vessels may develop.
It usually affects both eyes and can cause severe vision loss.
There are various stages of retinopathy, from the mildest form where there are
micro aneurysms, to the advanced stage where, because the retina seeks
nourishment, new abnormal and fragile blood vessels develop. If they leak blood,
severe vision loss and even blindness may result.
All diabetics are at risk. Further, in early stages, there are no symptoms. So, it’s very important that patients have a comprehensive dilated eye exam every year. Timely treatment and follow-up is essential for reducing the risk of blindness. So don’t wait, if you are a diabetic, and have not had a recent eye exam, schedule an appointment.
