Some Facts About Glaucoma Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve in the back of the eye, resulting in vision loss and blindness. Three million Americans have glaucoma. Only half of them are aware of it and can be gradually going blind. With glaucoma, the internal fluid of the eye drains too slowly, resulting in dangerous buildup of pressure in the eye. Unless this pressure is controlled, damage to the optic nerve results in loss of vision. Since glaucoma has no symptoms initially, it is called the "silent thief of sight". Early detection and treatment is key to saving vision. This requires careful examination with physicians at the forefront of glaucoma knowledge, technology, and treatment.
