OPS has completed extensive training on dry eye disease and treatment. We are very happy to offer very thorough evaluation of your dry eye disease and subsequently design a treatment plan specifically for you. We have worked with many pharmaceutical companies to stay abreast of the newest and best treatments available for dry eye disease. Michelle Beachkofsky, O.D.
Dr. Beachkofsky is a graduate of Purdue University and the Pennsylvania
College of Optometry. She has had relevant private practice experience, and
joined our group after high recommendation by her peers. Dr. Beachkofsky completed a comprehensive residency in specialty contact lenses and anterior segment disease.
Br. Beachkofsky is available for adult eye exams, and the expert fitting of soft, hard, and gas permeable contact lenses, offering the latest available products.
Dry Eye Disease is a disease that
afflicts approximately one in five people in the United States. Most of these
people do not know they have dry eyes, however they are bothered by the
symptoms.
What is dry eye?
Dry eye is the result of a
condition in which not enough tears are produced or a poor quality of
tears are produced and evaporate too quickly.
What are symptoms of dry eye?
- Dryness sensation in the eyes
- Itching
- Burning
- Tearing
- Gritty sensation
- Foreign body sensation (“I feel like there is an eyelash in my eye”)
- Intolerance to contact lenses
- Blurred vision
- Redness
- Sensitivity to light
What are some of the causes of dry eye?
- Age
- Certain diseases
- Diabetes
- Sjogren’s
- Parkinson’s
- Thyroid disease
- Auto-immune disease
- Hormonal changes (especially after menopause)
- Medications (prescription and
over the counter)
- High blood pressure medications
- Antihistamines
- Diuretics
- Antidepressants
- Anti-anxiety medications
- Sleeping pills
- Pain medications
- Cold and allergy products
- Motion sickness medications
- Environmental causes
- High altitude
- Air conditioning
- Smoke
- Computer use
- Contact lenses
- Eye surgery (i.e. refractive surgery) can aggravate dry eye.
- Corneal dystrophies
- New study data shows that the imbalance of “good” fats and “bad fats” can cause dry eye.
The staff at Ophthalmology Physicians and Surgeons (OPS) has completed specialized training to become a Dry Eye Center of Excellence. By undertaking additional training on dry eye symptoms and patient care, the staff at OPS is furthering their goal to offer patients exceptional health care. We understand that no two patients are alike and therefore our goal is to customize a treatment plan for each patient.
